An avalanche in Austria killed three Dutch skiers. (Guardian)
A European court ruled that the Swiss government violated its citizens’ human rights by not doing enough to stop climate change. It’s a major ruling that will likely lead to more legal challenges throughout Europe. (New York Times)
Climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested in the Hague while protesting fossil fuel subsidies. (BBC)
Politics
Geert Wilders’ far-right PVV party has dropped Nexit, Dutch Brexit, from its party platform. The PVV has dropped a series of controversial proposals since last November’s election, as cabinet formation talks drag on. (Dutch News)
The Department of War
The Netherlands, along with five other countries bordering the North Sea, signed a trade agreement to protect underwater infrastructure. (Politico)
Business
Reuters reports that the Dutch government will likely comply with U.S. demands to force chip-maker ASML to stop servicing equipment sold to China. I wrote about how the Dutch got caught up in this U.S. / China trade war here.
Arts
The New York Times profiled 76 year-old Dutch-Surinamese author Astrid Roemer. Her 1982 book On a Woman’s Madness was translated into English last year, and shortlisted for the National Book Award for translated literature.
What I’d Rather Not Think About by Jente Posthuma, “an inventive and worthy addition to the ever-swelling genre of grief narratives” was longlisted for the International Booker Prize. (Publisher’s Weekly)

I’m loving Ripley on Netflix after one ep. I was curious why the director chose black and white—most period pieces are in color, after all. He told the Daily Beast: “I did want [Italy] to not feel like a postcard.”
The cop-terrorist cat-and-mouse Netflix series The Golden Hour (Het Gouden Uur) was pretty gripping… but also so violent it gave me nightmares. So…
